Griezmann goes from villain to hero at Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad’s Antoine Griezmann is hopeful he has gone from villain to hero in the space of 90 minutes following his goal against Barcelona last Saturday.

The French Under -21 international incurred the wrath of fans at Anoeta with his declaration over the summer, that he wanted to move to AtlĂ©tico Madrid, yet his strike against Pep Guardiola’s men could not have come at a more opportune moment as he seeks to reconcile himself with the Txuri-urdin supporters.: since retracted, “The whole match was great for me,” he said. “The point we got, my goal, then later the applause from the stands. I hope the fans have now made their peace with me after that goal.”
He also confessed that against Barca his team was nowhere near its best during the first half: “We showed them too much respect and didn’t put them under pressure, but in the second half we gave everything, went for it and got a draw.” he explained.
Griezmann confessed it felt ‘strange’ to be playing on the right-hand side, although he remembered playing there with the French youth teams: “I like it because I get more chances to pass or shoot. But it doesn’t matter to me where I play.”
Despite his delight with the result he maintains that drawing with Barca does not mean Sociedad can beat anybody, adding: “We have to forget about that match, against the best team in the world, and think about Sevilla. We will work hard to get something there.”
Finally, he insisted Real Sociedad have a squad with great quality this season in which ‘there are no first team players or substitutes.’ We are a group,” he continued. “As the boss says, we are not just eleven players. We have a very good bench and I’m sure the substitutes can do great things also.”
